| I've made only a few AMV's which was ages ago on Window Movie Maker (Lol!) And I was wondering if anyone had any tips on making AMV's? Like how to make it more interesting, whether practice makes perfect - like they say. C: I'd like some encouragement considering whatever I make, I put done - I seriously should make it with more LOVE <3 |

| With style, I find a combination of all your favourite techniques establishes a style which is perfect for you and something you'll like yourself. If you like simple, vid simple. If you like flashy, vid flashy etc. Something I love to focus on is pace, timing and flow, which is especially important with WMM because you can't rely on effects like masking. For example, if the song speeds up, get some action in there! Or make something important happen like a first kiss or a rage face. With flow, transitions are important. Use appropriate transitions for your style. And timing, well, just acknoledge beats and stuff. I'm sure you can work that one out. |

| Thanks Pringle Lady, I remember using WMM and for action scenes I would use fast music, and for slow it'd be like slow motion or a kiss. Etc. (: |

| The only thing I can really suggest (that hasn't been said already) is to never take others opinions for granted. And never rely on masking or effects, this is something that really bothers me, personally. I've found a lot of editors, once they get advanced programs, let their actual editing slide. I'm not saying masking and effects are bad or anything, just that they shouldn't be heavily relied upon. Also be diverse, vidding to different kinds of songs and fandoms w/e will keep you and those watching more interested.
...That was more then one thing. XC |

| What do you mean by "Others opinions for granted." ? Sorry I don't understand ;.; Hmm that's true, I mean I personally love masking and I find effects okay, but I'm not fond of the flashing effects effects of all different colours, when it's like "WOWZA." But AMV making is better if they can do a video that can convey emotions without having to use effects, that proves how well they can manage it. Thanks! :3 |

| I'm guilty of what Yunarella said..... I was so excited when I got masking....I focused all my attentions to do masking well....I don't think that's a bad thing at all because it's good to master one thing before making another perfect, which in my case was masking....now I'm trying to get flow perfect.... but when you edit with WMM...my tip would be following EVERY single beats >.< oh and lyric following helps too. When I made this one video in WMM....I seriously followed EVERY SINGLE beats with flashes and crossfades and that was really popular oh and you can definitely try storytelling on your own too^^ |

Like, if someone give you advice or a review on a video, you usually shouldn't just disregard it. Usually. I'm pretty sure that's what I was trying to say. :l |

This is my opinion aswell, sometimes I feel ppl really go overboard with the effects, like add effects that doesn't really add anything to the following of the beat, story, mood etc. It's just there as an effect. Sure it shows skills, but I mostly get distracted from it. I believe that there is fun to add it, beause it is funny to experiment a little... But sometimes it's just tacky. One prime exampel of that is actually a vid I made myself (broken strings, cloti) which turned out shit, since I just poped some random effects in it, though I liked doing it since I was trying something new...
Okay I've been rambling... What Im trying to say focus on the content and message you want to get cross. Do you wanna make a hard action vid with no story or maybe a slow romantic one, make sure that what you do emphasize that. Dont add effects "just because". Following the beat varies in important. Emotional and story vids useally dont have to follow the beat all the way through since it might need more time to let the emotion "sink in".
What is important when you edit with WMM, I was stuck with it for 2-3 years *shrughs*, is that you really got a good song to go with it. I had two amv's done with WMM that had over 70000 views (one of em is deleted now). And they only got it since I picked songs that really fited the story I was going for and the originalm story of the game/movie. So you really need a good story (if it's cannon it helps a lot, because than you wont notice the limitations of the program as much), awesome song or a really good sense of beat and rythm. All those three and you got a winner! Im not to fond of vids that only go with the beat, but it sure is impressive to see ppls good sense of rythm mixed with cool effects :) |

| You want tips?
Try not to add your name to the video... I know that if videos don't have the user's name on them they can be stolen, but the names distract people (unless you write only one or two letters of your name and put it in the corner with a very transparent color)
Even when doing fast songs videos, try to use only the essencial effects. Don't trow effects just because you think it's pretty. Like I always say "less is more". Sometimes, less effects make a beautiful video.
Choose your textures carefully. People tend to use all kinds of textures nowadays. But choose them carefully. Textures can ruin a video quality and its color. ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Proud member of Legacy Hearts Studios and leader of Tears From An Angel Studios. | I think each editor should always listen to the advice around them, but also to yourself! There are many different ways to edit, whether you like to use pop songs, hardcore music, soft and sweet, or action/trailer. If you're not sure about your projects, just piddle! I find that I sometimes get inspiration just by throwing a few things together! (: Besides, nothing is really a failed attempt! You just might figure out 15 ways you don't want to make a video! At least, that's what I like to tell myself. xD |

| My advice; practice, practice, practice! The more you vid, the more chance you have of improving your skills. Try experimenting with different effects - don't just stick with the default transitions since that can be boring and tacky. Mind you, if you're using WMM you'll really need to focus on the flow of the song and what it really means (rather than mashing a whole lot of random scenes together - not that I'm not guilty of this, however :p).
Also, it's important to watch other people's videos and evaluate them. It helps to give you a sense of what works and what doesn't. |

| Well it really just depends on the person I guess. Lots of people make AMVs, but every one of them is different, and unique in the way someone has made them.
Some people like adding colours, some people like to mask characters in order to make a story to the video, some people add patterns etc. etc.
For me, I like to create a "mood" for the video- so if its a sad song and a sad story, I'll add a sad colour (like dark blue) and make sure the characters don't look happy. So it keeps with the sad, sorrowful feeling. And of course, I like to keep everything to te beat of the song :)
All I can say is keep practicing! The more videos you make, the better you become :)
Do you only have Windows Movie Maker? |

| FinalCelticFantasy: I know what you mean, I've seen a few AMV's that have so many effects in it, it's looked like an over-the-top disco, very tacky. :/ Thank you, I think it's good to mix the song with the mood, and the rhythm of it. I've seen some WMM ones that have been pretty good. (:
Ashe: Ah okay, I've seen a few people have their name horizontal, up the side of the video. It can be sometimes distracting, but I guess people want to put it there so people knows who has made it, and if someone's stole it they'll know. Thank you, I like textures so I try to be careful x)
EmoLobster: That is a good thing to tell youtself, and it's great to experiment indeed : D There is many ways!
The Slyph One: Thank you, I think practice makes perfect. I used WMM in my past videos and I would always make sure the video would go with the song, so if in the lyrics they said 'Moon' I'd put a clip with a moon in it, but making sure it's meaningful. (: Thank you very much.
Lucyrinoa: Thank you very much : D I try to practice but I tend to always put down my videos D: Whenever I see good AMV's/MMV's I tend to pressure myself to do better, then I get stressed. >.< It's not good. I dislike it when that happens.
MissMollie: That is true. (: Thank you! I think I should keep practicing! (: Oh, I have Sony Vegas, I've had it for almost half a year now? Or maybe a year? I don't know, but I've tried using it, and I'm getting better at using Sony Vegas, it's just coming up with ideas for an AMV. >.< |
